Attacks against corporate networks on the rise, says Redmond.

Microsoft has admitted that a flaw in its Internet Explorer web browser enabled hackers to gain access to Google’s system, an event that resulted in Google threatening to pull its operations in China.

In a post on its Microsoft Security Response Center, director Mike Reavey said that a bug within Internet Explorer could allow hackers to remotely run programs on infected machines.

“Based upon our investigations, we have determined that Internet Explorer was one of the vectors used in targeted and sophisticated attacks against Google and possibly other corporate networks,” Reavey wrote.

“Microsoft has not seen widespread customer impact, rather only targeted and limited attacks exploiting IE 6 at this time,” Reavey said. “Our teams are currently working to develop an update and we will take appropriate action to protect customers when the update has met the quality bar for broad distribution. That may include releasing the update out of band.”

Reavey added that all companies should be more aware of potential security issues and make sure that their security software is up-to-date. “It is important to note that complex attacks targeting specific corporate networks are becoming more prevalent in the threat landscape, therefore organisations should follow defence-in-depth best practices, and deploy multiple layers of protection to improve their security posture,” he said.

Following the attacks, which targeted human rights activists and were believed to have originated in China, Google said that is was no longer willing to censor its search results in the country. The claim is likely to mean that Google’s entire Chinese operation will shut, as the Chinese government is very strict about what information its citizens can access online.

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER.

A 4,000-year-old Egyptian mummy was taken on a bizarre day trip today to try and unlock some of the secrets of the ancient world.
The relic is usually held at the Barnum Museum in Connecticut, but was shuttled to Quinnipiac University in an unusual procession, to be studied using the institution’s high-tech hospital scanner.
The tests could answer questions on whether a mysterious packet inside her body was a mummified bird killed as an offering to the gods to help secure the woman a place in the afterlife.
Researchers might also be able to learn more about the woman’s life on earth, including her age and whether she had children.

Mystery: Kathy Maher, executive director at the Barnum Museum, examines the mummy's empty casket.

Experts today carefully packed the mummy into a modern-day coffin provided by local undertakers and transported in hearse with a police escort.
The mummy, known as Pa-Ib and believed to date from around 2,000 BC, was a prized exhibit of the flamboyant US showman P.T. Barnum and has been in the Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, Connecticut, since the 1890s.
Scientists will then be able to peer inside the mummified remains in unprecedented detail using a Toshiba 64-slice CT scanner usually used for diagnosing diseases in living patients.
It has a resolution eight times better than another scanner used on the same mummy in 2006, when tests revealed a number of packages inside the abdominal cavity.
One archaeologist speculated one of these bundles could be a bird mummy, a prospect that has excited Egyptologists.

Preserved: the torso of a 4,000-year-old mummy Pa-Ib being wrapped before being taken for scans.

The pelvis also showed some evidence that the woman had given birth, but the original data was erased to make way for patient scans.
The latest scans could shed yield new discoveries which could prove important to archaeologists’ understanding of ancient rituals.
‘It really is going to give us a fantastic view of this mummy,’ said Professor Ronald Beckett, co-director of the Bioanthropology Research Institute at Quinnipiac.
‘Every mummy has a story to tell. Every piece of information adds to our understanding of the ancient Egyptians.’
Lorelei Corcoran, director of the Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology at the University of Memphis, called the mummy ‘extremely unusual’.
‘It just gives us another example of this very intriguing phenomenon of bringing a gift with you to the afterlife,’ she said.
Dr Corcoran said she knows of only two other human mummies with bird mummies, one at the J. Paul Getty Museum in California and another in Switzerland.
She said birds such as the falcon and ibis were associated with the Egyptian god Thoth, who was believed to play an influential role in the final stage of judgement of the dead.
‘He’s the one whose opinion you would want to influence in order to get to the eternal afterlife,’ she said.

Delicate: curators carefully move the head and body ready to be transported to the scanner.

Colleen Manassa, assistant professor of Egyptology at Yale University, said the likelihood of a bird mummy inside a human mummy would be ‘highly improbable’ if the human mummy is 4,000 years old, as the museum believes, because Egyptians were not embalming animals around that time.
She said the mummy is likely to be younger, which would mean there could be a bird mummy inside, but it would still be highly unusual.
‘It would make it a very important mummy,’ Prof Manassa said, by showing the practice of animal offerings was not just done at temples.
Prof Manassa said the closest time parallel is a case at an Egyptian museum in which a baboon was mummified and wrapped in a bundle that was placed over the mummified and wrapped body of a woman separately more than 3,000 years ago.
Prof Beckett said the packets may turn out to be organs, which were taken out of the body, preserved and placed back in the mummy for use in the afterlife.
‘Wouldn’t it be wonderful if it turned out to be a bird?’ he said. ‘It’s just so rare that it would be that we would be surprised.’
Prof Beckett said he does not believe the woman was royalty, saying her worn teeth suggest the diet of a commoner.
Determining the cause of death will be difficult, researchers say, but they might be able to offer a range of diseases from which the mummified woman could have suffered, such as arthritis.

By Daniel Ionescu, PC World.

It’s been less than a year since the iPhone 3GS launched, and the rumor mill is already churning out speculation about an upcoming iPhone 4G, expected as early as May.

New rumors have been circulating over the past couple of days, saying a new Apple iPhone 4G will be available by June, or even as early as May. Besides the earlier-than-expected launch date (new iPhone models traditionally come out in June or July), potential new features are in discussion as well, such as a better camera, an OLED screen, a removable battery, and different casing.

A Bloomberg/BusinessWeek report quotes an analyst from the Goldman Sachs Group saying the iPhone 4G would have a better camera than the 3-megapixel shooter found on the iPhone 3GS. The iPhone 4G’s camera could offer up to 5 megapixels, which would put it on the par with the camera in Google’s Nexus One.

The story also speculates that Apple is working on an updated version of the iPhone OS with an overhauled App Store. The analyst in the Bloomberg story did not identify who gave him the information, but speculates the iPhone 4G will go into production as early as April, with availability expected sometime in June or July.

Derailing from the usual July/July launch timeframe though, is a report originating from a French Web site, which claims we are likely to see the next generation iPhone in May. The report says Apple targeted May because it thought that’s when Google would release their Nexus One Android smartphone. Actually, the Nexus One was unveiled earlier this month. Is it like that Apple would move up the release of a new iPhone to compete with Google? Maybe. But it doesn’t seem likely that Apple would misjudge Google’s launch date by several months.

A concept image of the rumored iPhone 4G, courtesy of iPhoneRoot.com.

Also this week, a report from Korea Times quoted unnamed mobile executives claiming the iPhone 4G will have an OLED screen and support for video chat. Most surprisingly, it claimed that the upcoming iPhone would feature a removable battery — though the chances of this happening are slight (Apple refused to use removable batteries in all three generations of iPhones and its latest laptops also sport non-removable batteries).

A concept image of the rumored iPhone 4G, courtesy of iPhoneRoot.com.

All in all, some of these rumors are plausible, such as the OLED screen and a better camera, though earlier launch dates as soon as May might seem a bit far-fetched, as Apple usually refreshes products in a yearly cycle.

A concept image of the rumored iPhone 4G, courtesy of iPhoneRoot.com.

Features

Some of the features of dygraphs:

Plots time series without using an external server or Flash

Works in Internet Explorer (using excanvas)

Lightweight (45kb) and responsive

Displays values on mouseover (this makes it easily discoverable)

Supports error bands around data series

Interactive zoom

Adjustable averaging period

Can intelligently chart fractions

Customizable click-through actions

Compatible with the Google Visualization API

Intelligent defaults make it easy to use

Dygraphs

Some things to notice:

There’s less seasonal temperature variation in SF than in NY.

The difference is about 15° F for SF vs. 50° F for NY.

The daily data (set rolling period to 1) is quite noisy and hides this conclusion.

Using a 14-day moving average makes it clearer. A 100-day rolling period averages out nearly all the specifics from the data.

There’s a gap in the data for SF, when the weather station was down (zoom into October 2007 to see it).

The bands around each point indicate average highs and lows.

There is a lot of data in this chart: low, average and high for each city on each day of a three year period ≈ 6000 data points in all.

dygraphs allows the user to explore the data and discover these facts.

We still love pitching iPhone ideas but the Palm Pre offers us another way to present ideas that connect our clients with their customers. In light of this fact, we put together another PSD to help our designers pitch and develop polished concepts using a tool their pretty familiar with, Photoshop.

It’s put together in a similar fashion to the iPhone PSD, in that the elements are built with vectors for easy editing and scaling. We tried to capture most of the common GUI elements but inevitably we’ll be updating this as we use it more ourselves.

Update: We’ve been asked to remove the zip file that included the webOS font Coconut. The updated PSDs require CS4 and their corresponding font.

We’ve been holding off updating the Photoshop file until we could properly implement the additions. We built it using vectors, so it’s all still fully editable. • Timeline bar editor
• Horizontal iPhone

For most of us, Google is the search engine of choice.

We use Google to do research or when we are looking for something in the web. When we want to do a search, we type the keyword/s and then click “Enter”. That’s how you do a search, right? Right. But a lot of people do not know that Google lets you make use of operator commands. Operator commands are special query words that have special meaning in the Google database which does a “unique” kind of search.

So here are some useful and powerful(if used correct and some times in combination) Google operators:

Weather London
Shows the weather in the location specified.

Phrase search ( “” )
By putting double quotes around a set of words, you are telling Google to consider the exact words in that exact order without any change.

Search within a specific website ( site: )
Google allows you to specify that your search results must come from a given website. For example, the query [ Design site:geeksare.in ] will return pages about Design but only from GeeksAre.In . The simpler queries [ Design geeksare.in ] or [ Design Geeks Are In ] will usually be just as good, though they might return results from other sites that mention Geeks Are In. You can also specify a whole class of sites, for example [ Design site:.org ] will return results only from a .org domain and [ Design site:.gr ] will return results only from Greek sites.

Terms you want to exclude (-)
Attaching a minus sign immediately before a word indicates that you do not want pages that contain this word to appear in your results. The minus sign should appear immediately before the word and should be preceded with a space. For example, in the query [ anti-virus software ], the minus sign is used as a hyphen and will not be interpreted as an exclusion symbol; whereas the query [ anti-virus -software ] will search for the words ‘anti-virus’ but exclude references to software. You can exclude as many words as you want by using the - sign in front of all of them, for example [ jaguar -cars -football -os ]. The - sign can be used to exclude more than just words. For example, place a hyphen before the ‘site:’ operator (without a space) to exclude a specific site from your search results.

Fill in the blanks (*)
The *, or wildcard, is a little-known feature that can be very powerful. If you include * within a query, it tells Google to try to treat the star as a placeholder for any unknown term(s) and then find the best matches. For example, the search [ Google * ] will give you results about many of Google’s products. The query [ Obama voted * on the * bill ] will give you stories about different votes on different bills. Note that the * operator works only on whole words, not parts of words.

Search exactly as is (+)
Google employs synonyms automatically, so that it finds pages that mention, for example, childcare for the query [ child care ] (with a space), or Greece history for the query [ gr history ]. But sometimes Google helps out a little too much and gives you a synonym when you don’t really want it. By attaching a + immediately before a word (remember, don’t add a space after the +), you are telling Google to match that word precisely as you typed it. Putting double quotes around a single word will do the same thing.

The OR operator
Google’s default behavior is to consider all the words in a search. If you want to specifically allow either one of several words, you can use the OR operator (note that you have to type ‘OR’ in ALL CAPS). For example, [ iPhone 2007 OR 2008 ] will give you results about either one of these years, whereas [ iPhone 2007 2008 ] (without the OR) will show pages that include both years on the same page. The symbol | can be substituted for OR. (The AND operator, by the way, is the default, so it is not needed.)

movie:Manchester
Shows a list of movies, showtime and cinemas in the location specified.

site:digg.com
Lists the pages indexed in Google for the specified domain.

allintitle:web design Cyprus
Shows pages that only have the keywords specified in the page title, in the example above pages that only contain web, design and Cyprus in no particular order. To apply order simply place quotation marks around the keywords during the query.

allinurl:free vector images
Works the same way as the allintitle: operator only the keywords specified are matched to the URL instead of the page title.

Search for synonyms ( ~ )
Example: great ~resources for web designers, will return also results of “resources” synonyms.

filetype:pdf
Restricts the search only to PDF documents.

inanchor:“Cool movies”
The ‘inanchor’: operator searches for your specified term in the text of a page that is highlighted as a link.

related:www.bbc.co.uk
The ‘related’: operator will show websites/results related and or similar to the specified domain.

Exceptions

Search is rarely absolute. Search engines use a variety of techniques to imitate how people think and to approximate their behavior. As a result, most rules have exceptions. For example, the query [ for better or for worse ] will not be interpreted by Google as an OR query, but as a phrase that matches a (very popular) comic strip. Google will show calculator results for the query [ 34 * 87 ] rather than use the ‘Fill in the blanks’ operator. Both cases follow the obvious intent of the query.

Exceptions to ‘Every word matters’

Words that are commonly used, like ‘the,’ ‘a,’ and ‘for,’ are usually ignored (these are called stop words). But there are even exceptions to this exception. The search [ the who ] likely refers to the band; the query [ who ] probably refers to the World Health Organization — Google will not ignore the word ‘the’ in the first query.

Synonyms might replace some words in your original query. (Adding + before a word disables synonyms.)

A particular word might not appear on a page in your results if there is sufficient other evidence that the page is relevant. The evidence might come from language analysis that Google has done or many other sources. For example, the query [ overhead view of the bellagio pool ] will give you nice overhead pictures from pages that do not include the word ‘overhead.’

Punctuation that is not ignored

Punctuation in popular terms that have particular meanings, like [ C++ ] or [ C# ] (both are names of programming languages), are not ignored.

The dollar sign ($) is used to indicate prices. [ nikon 400 ] and [ nikon $400 ] will give different results.

The hyphen - is sometimes used as a signal that the two words around it are very strongly connected. (Unless there is no space after the – and a space before it, in which case it is a negative sign.)

The underscore symbol _ is not ignored when it connects two words, e.g. [ quick_sort ].
